Photo Essay: Special Olympics Track

NHS Special Olympics Track Team off to the races at Appleton North on Saturday

The NHS Special Olympics Track Team plans to tear up the competition this weekend at Appleton North High School.

From the time I spent photographing — and running with — the team, I can say that I expect nothing less than the best of these Olympians. They have put the time, work and energy needed to form a team that functions like a lean-mean-running-machine. It tires me out to watch them. At the same time, I am astonished by their abundant energy. More than a few times I had to scurry off the track to avoid being run over (Image #8 in the slideshow).

In the hour that I spent with the team on Monday, and during the hours spent the last couple of weeks, I realized something. We, myself included, can lose sight of all of the extraordinary, inspiring, champion-like, activities that take place on campus. This is understandable of course: we all have family, work, other commitments, and with 1900+ students, it can be difficult to know what all is going on. I encourage you though, should you have the time on Saturday, to go to the S.O. Track meet and cheer peers from down the hall. After all, being a champion does not just mean working toward success: it means sharing in others’ too.

The Neenah Special Olympics Track Team will be competing at Appleton North High School on Saturday, May 13. Opening Ceremonies are at 9:45 a.m.
