Many students have probably heard of the class, Creative Writing, but few have heard of the club. Creative Writing club, led by senior Natasha Igl, is a way to continue one’s love of writing students may have found in the class.
“I wasn’t aware of the fact that the high school even had a Creative Writing Club until my junior year in high school, Igl said.
Creative Writing is a growing club that is a safe environment for students to share their ideas and their own pieces of writing.
Igl shared her own experience and set the scene for a meeting. “When I did show for a meeting, I enjoyed it mostly because of the other kids and the fun activities that we did.”
She said that she became a little less shy about sharing and gained a few extra prompts if she ever got stuck on how to create an idea. “I never would have thought to use Apples to Apples to create a short story.”
Within the club, peers help each other come out of their comfort zones with allowing writers to push themselves past where they thought they could go, and to make students think outside the box of normality.
“Even though I love it when people share, I’m not going to force anyone to,” Igl said.
If Igl has a game planned that week, then it will take up the whole meeting. She will leave them with the thought as to why she made them do it.
“All I want is for people to actually enjoy writing. If it’s not fun, it’s not worth doing.” Igl explained.
Creative Writing club meets on Thursdays, at 3:30 p.m. to approximately 4:30 p.m. A variety of writing styles are featured in the club. Here is an example of one of the writings, from a member of Creative Writing club.
“You Can Never Capture That” by Charley Hrobsky
“You can never truly capture
the full beauty of something you love
the eyes…
mysterious or joyful
you can never capture that
the face…
angelic or rugged
you can never capture that
how you perceive them to be…
you can never capture that
not in words,
music,
drawings,
nothing.
Why?
Because,
when you love someone or something…
you see it differently today
because of what you learned about it yesterday”
