Fall Sports Recap
2015 was an eventful year for fall season for Neenah sports. The season was full of many successes, and now it is time to reflect on those successes.
In the Cross Country world, both teams had strong outings. Both the Girls’ and Boys’ team came in second at the sectional meet and were able to compete in team berths at the state meet. Led by Matt Bourland, the Boys’ team came in at 14th, and the Girls’ in 20th. Clearly, it was a successful season for both teams, and fans look forward to seeing how teams build on that success next year.
Another perennial power had a great season this year, girls’ tennis. Entering the state tournament with an 18-1 record, Neenah went on to win the tournament with a 4-3 win over Brookfield East. The girls’ swept all three doubles matches, and won the first state title in sports for Neenah since 2007 in boys’ soccer. After finishing second last year, it was a great comeback for a great team.
Another team that was close to a title was the Equestrian team. The team qualified for state after winning a regional meet back in September. With a strong outing at the state meet in Madison, the team came in second place for division A. Chippewa Falls won the title for the third consecutive year, but Neenah has a strong core, and could win the title next year.
Sadly, the boys’ volleyball team did not post a winning record this year. Ending the season 2-15, the boys’ swept both Nicolet and Kaukauna. This offseason, the team will look at would it did correctly, and build on those strengths for a strong season next year.
A team that continues to build on past successes is Neenah Football. After shutting out Milwaukee Riverside 35-0, the boys’ advanced to the second round for the first time since 2006. Facing conference rivals, Fond Du Lac, the team made a good outing. After holding Fondy to 21 in the first half, Fond Du Lac scored a late touchdown to bring the score to 28-14. The Cardinals then pulled away in the second half, ending with a score of 42-14. Although Neenah was eliminated in the second round, the team keeps going farther and improving.
One team that was close to a champioship this year was girls’ volleyball. After a heartbreaking loss to Oconomowoc in the quarterfinals, the girls were eliminated from WIAA competition. Finishing 30-16 the girls’ were a dominating force in the conference.
Now for the sports still in their seasons. Girls’ swimming is having a great year so far. The Rockets captured its eighth consecutive WIAA sectional championship, totaling 324 points to outscore Appleton North by 13 points. Neenah had four event champions who earned automatic berths to this weekend’s state meet.
Overall, it was a great fall for the Rockets and fans look forward to seeing how Rockets do in the winter sports season.
