New Art Showcase Features Original Work of Staff

Lisa Dorschner, an art teacher at NHS, said she came up with the original idea for a teacher showcase as part of NHS’s “Play like a Champion” initiative.

A new showcase in Conant features monthly displays of art pieces made by NHS teachers and staff.

Lisa Dorschner, an art teacher at NHS, said she came up with the original idea for a teacher showcase as part of NHS’s “Play like a Champion” initiative.

“I wanted to find a way to help students see that they can be creative and do art outside of school as adults,” Dorschner said. “As staff, we can ‘champion’ our students [by] sharing our art, which shows the creative ways we also see and experience the world.”

Kevin McGannon, a Special Education teacher at NHS, had art pieces showcased earlier this year.

He said that when Dorschner reached out to him he was excited to show his work because it is a way to communicate his voice.

“As [an] artist, your work is how you communicate . . . I kind of just wanted to put it out there,” he said.

Peggy Olson, a retired NHS staff member, has photographs being featured for the month of November.

She said she started photography when taking baby pictures of her children and her interest grew from there.

It’s an outlet,” she said. “I just have fun capturing all the different photos . . . My favorite one is of the spider web I discovered just walking in my yard.”

In the future, students can look forward to seeing other interesting pieces including but not limited to: quilting, cartooning, pottery and woodwork.
