The Madison Women’s March, consisting of approximately 75,000 participants, took place on Jan. 21. This was a march in solidarity with the women’s march in Washington D.C. The goal of the march was to preach equality for women and minorities in the eyes of the government and new president.
Senior Beatrice Padgham stood among the women at the march and witnessed the day’s events. She explains that the most memorable part of the day was looking at the protesters and witnessing an elderly woman with tears running down her face from the joy of everyone being united.
“The march made me feel powerful, it inspired me that my voice is not alone, and that there are thousands of people who are willing to stand up for what they believe in,” Padgham said.
The Madison’s Women March was just one of the many marches that took place, with the number of protesters totaling over three million. The protests were mostly peaceful, and many participants expressed themselves through signs, chants, and songs about equality.
Padgham had one resounding comment about the protest, one that will cause her to remember the event for years to come. With a tear in her eye, Padgham concluded: “The march was built on love, it was so beautiful.”
