Letter From the Editor: The Best Year Yet

By showing compassion, we can make this school year the best one we’ve ever had.

Emilee Wise, Editor-in-Chief

Per usual, no matter how hard we dug in our heels and begged Time for “just one more day,” the school year has, inevitably, arrived just as punctually as ever.

I have experienced my fair share of letting the year take me by the arms and swing me around, leaving me completely out of control.  I have had my full of living the weekdays for the weekends or my daily hours for 3:20 p.m. No longer do I want to consume myself so entirely with my longing for sleep that I forget that it is being awake that counts.

If we want this year to be the best yet, we have to deliberately choose to make it that way.  My dad told me over and over as a kid that joy is not a feeling — it is an action, a choice, a mindset.  That is not to say we will not have problems. Problems are inevitable. We cannot always pass the test, we will not always be victorious over the voices in our heads, there is no way we can always remember our parts or never lose the game or always say the right thing.

But that is absolutely and completely okay.

I believe one of our generation’s largest traits is compassion, and compassion, by definition, means concern for others.  We will not always feel on top of the world, but if we can show compassion whenever possible, the act just might be reflected when we need it most.

I love NHS, and I love its students.  This year, I want to share your stories.  Compassion is provoked when you feel a connection to someone or something.  The Satellite does just that.  I encourage you to read our stories, scroll through our pictures, and watch our videos, because each piece is created with the intention to not only educate, but spread the stories of our community and its members– to spread compassion.

The time is now, NHS.

Our job is to let compassion run wild through our halls, on our stage, around our fields and courts, and into our classrooms.  Here is to the 2018-’19 school year; this one is going to be the best one yet.
