National Merit Scholar Provides Insight Into Everyday Life

Zach Schmitt and Will Focault

The National Merit Scholar opportunity is one that many people dream of reaching, but that few people do. To Alex Lee, class of 2020, that dream has become a reality.

A well-rounded student and an avid musician, Lee’s morning starts at 6:30 everyday. After school is out, he practices piano and continues to work out the specifics of applying for colleges around the country.

Though he seems simply like an average high school kid, his achievements and work ethic are extraordinary.

Growing up, Lee was surrounded by extremely supportive parents, jokingly stating: “My dad once locked me in a room and forced me to learn my multiplication tables.”

This immense support along with Lee’s natural desire to learn proved beneficial.  As documented on the district website, he received a perfect ACT score and has taken measures to study statistics before one day going into the medical field.

Lee believes:  “You get out of life what you put into it.”

It is pretty evident that he has put an incredible amount into it.

As a senior, he has found NHS to be accepting and riveting with possibility, urging anyone connected with the school to get involved in some way during their time here. According to Lee, the possibilities are endless and should be explored.

This determination — this drive — is what sets him apart from his colleagues at NHS. His desire to better himself and idea that hard work can change an attitude has become something of a rarity among high school students. His achievements are immense and the recognition that he has been getting on behalf of them is undoubtedly deserved. Alex Lee is an incredible intellect, an involved leader and a true inspiration.
