Students Hard Work to Shine on Stage: Opener 2019
November 26, 2019
NHS’s extracurricular music groups are performing various styles of music once again on Nov. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Pickard Auditorium.
The free event can be found on the NJSD website activity calendar.
The itinerary for Opener includes performances by iJazz, aJazz, TOC, Vintage and Act II. Preparation prior to Opener varies between each group.
“Preparation depends on the group. TOC and Show Choir preparation is done early since the groups only get to rehearse twice a week, while aJazz has rehearsal every other day,” Mr. David Dunning, Vintage band director and aJazz director, said.
Opener will start off with iJazz, a jazz group consisting primarily of freshmen and sophomores. iJazz rehearses once a week every Monday evening year round. Opener is the group’s first performance of the year and this talented group shall bring the audience fine playings of the songs “Malagueña,” “Now’s the Time,” “Route 66” and “All the Things You Are.”
Next is aJazz and their performance of the songs “Batalla,” “17 Mile Drive,” “Back in Time” and “This I Dig of You.” This group definitely will make “ya like jazz.”
Following aJazz is the phenomenal strings group TOC. TOC’s performance will make the stage come alive with divine playing of the songs “Amor Perdido,” “Sing Sing Sing” and “Toss the Bach.”
After TOC is the show choir Act II. This year Act II’s set brings forth the message: “Break out of your shell” portrayed by the songs “Shatter Me,” “Roller Coaster,” “Finding Wonderland,” “Stop,” “Yo-yo” and “Breakthrough.”
The night will conclude with a performance by the mighty warriors from Vintage. The group has been meeting since the end of August to bring their show Warriors to the stage. Warriors consists of “Diamonds/We are Brave,” “Warrior Song,” “Speechless from Aladdin,” “Fire Under my Feet,” “Feel Good” and “Carry On.”
The students who participate in making Opener a reality truly shine on stage. Opener consists of the hard work of many individuals in order to make the show worth it for all attending.
“Go to opener. It’s worth it,” senior Nikki Messick, past attendee, said.
