Review: Fine Dining Experience In the Heart of Downtown Neenah
January 3, 2020
As the cold winter months come in, Cannova’s Pizzeria provides a warm, welcoming atmosphere for all guests. With beautiful decor and talented musicians playing every day, why would you miss out on this fine dining experience? Cannova’s is a family-owned restaurant that takes great pride in making every experience memorable. Cannova’s has a new limited special every day so avid Italian diners are able to expand their palate with every visit. With the original restaurant being established in 1921, it truly has a long interesting background and brings the authentic Italian dining experience to Neenah.
Cannova’s was founded by Anthony Cannova in Freeport, Ill. The original structure had a grocery store in front of the pizzeria. After Anthony Cannova served in the Pacific in WWII, Anthony’s son Frank moved the pizzeria to its current location in 1964. Frank then stepped down and handed his control to his daughter, Linda and her husband Patrick, in 1983. Currently, Frank’s youngest daughter Debbie then went on to establish the Neenah location in 2005.
According to Cannova’s official Website: “It all began in 1921 with one man and a dream.”
Cannova’s to this day still uses Frank’s originally recipe of pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce, fresh bread and pizza dough. Cannova’s also carries some of Anthony Cannova’s original recipes. One of the recipes being the alfredo sauce, which includes: Asiago, Romano, and Parmesan cheese and the House Salad Dressing. All of their recipes are thought through and made from the heart. They have been carried on for several years and fed many Neenah families.
Food for Thought a section in the Fox Cities Magazine stated: “Forget the motherland – The best Italian food is made right here in Neenah.” Cannova’s switches their menu twice a year so that they are able to try different dishes to satisfy their customers. Cannova’s also has a wide variety of desserts to choose from. One of importance to the restaurant is none other than the cannoli.
Debbie the current owner of the Neenah location explained: “She remembers having cannolis, a very traditional Sicilian dessert, on Christmas Eve. Her mother and aunts would be in the kitchen making the little tubes and filling them with ricotta. Some had candied fruit, while others had dark chocolate and the ends dipped in pistachios.”
With Cannovas being open Tuesday-Sunday, patrons too can taste the astonishing Cannoli and more.
Pizza Today, which is a publication that reviews pizzas from all around the world, stated in their 1990 issue that Cannova’s is a “Pacesetter” of the Midwest.
With Neenah being a smaller town, it can be hard to find a true authentic Italian restaurant. As Food for Thought so accurately stated: “Forget the motherland – The best Italian food is made right here in Neenah.” Cannova’s being located right in the heart of downtown Neenah, it truly brings a special twist on traditional Italian meals. If foodies have the time to enjoy some amazing Italian food, Cannova’s is always a delicious choice!
