It’s very uncommon for someone to know their life path at 12 years old, but Marvin Walker does.
12 year old Marvin is in his Neenah home cutting up stuffed animals with kitchen scissors and making furry slippers, a reflection of his future aspirations to work at a more professional level — contacting manufacturers and businesses for work.
Marvin admits he makes clothes because he is “just really bored” and has “excess untapped creativity” waiting to be of use. He really doesn’t expect people to take too much notice but to his surprise, they do.
People noticed.
“Honestly the piece people started to take notice of, and my favorite piece, was probably my sheisty [a sheisty is a mask similar to a ski mask]. It’s made of a real fuzzy material and I roll it up and wear it like a beanie. I got a lot of compliments on that.”
When people start to take notice of some of his work, it motivates Marvin to push further and see how else he can make his fashion stand out. He starts making custom belts, screen printed shirts, and accenting his outfits with as much of his personality as he can.
Marvin’s motivation and self confidence continue to grow.
Marvin didn’t plan on making clothes on his own though. He’s in contact with a manufacturing company to make a full run of a pair of sweatpants that he’s been planning for awhile. This will be his first full scale clothing release, and he’s over the moon to see where this path takes him. He expects the sweatpants to be released this winter.
Martin feels that he’s doing this for forever. “It’s just been different settings, you know?”
He’s always made art and clothes, but now he has more to give away.
“I’m really confident this will work out.”
Confidence guides us and people notice.
