Mr. Christopher Jones, seventh-grade science teacher at the Shattuck Middle School, is getting NHS involved in his new fishing club this year.
Jones taught at Horace Mann Middle school as a science teacher in the Hurricane house from 1997 to 2007. Jones also taught science at Shattuck Middle School for seven years and is currently the science teacher for the Velocity program at Shattuck. Jones’s original career plan was to work for Department of Natural Resources, but he decided instead to become a science teacher. Jones said he was inspired by Jeff Martis and other great teachers while working as a teacher’s aide at Shattuck.
Jones earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Ecology from University of Wisconsin – Green Bay and his Master’s degree in Learning and Creative Arts from Lesley College.
Jones’s love for fishing started at a young age when his father first took him on fishing trips. Jones’s high school cross country coach, Mr. Bruess, was the main reason he got interested in fishing. His coach would take him ice fishing and out on his boat whenever he could.
“I was there the day my kids caught their first fish,” Jones said with a bright smile and proud voice, like a child’s when telling their parents about their good grades.
Jones created the Finatics Fishing Club with Mr. Steve Treankler three years ago. Finatics is strictly for middle school students. Jones wanted high school students to have the opportunity to be a part of a fishing club as well, so he ultimately created the fishing club for NHS this year. Jones said he enjoys teaching kids how to fish in his free time.
Currently, 15 students are in the fishing club. They meet once a week, on Wednesdays, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. They plan to participate in several ice fishing competitions and other fish outings this year.
Jones said his favorite memory of fishing is winning $13,000 in 2011 during the North American Bass Circuit Tournament on Lake Winnebago.
