The first Gender and Sexuality Alliance, GSA, meeting on Thursday, Sept. 17 started out with Little Caesar’s, soda and Twizzlers. Senior Alyx Prieto, president of the club, followed the food with going around the room and stating name, preferred pronouns, gender identity and sexual orientation. Mrs. Natalie Shea, one of the advisers, told new members about what GSA accomplished the previous year.

Students did a team building activity, recounting their first times being an activist. One girl’s memory was from when she was young and her parents were talking about same-sex marriage being illegal. She asked her mother what it was and after the mother explained, the girl went on saying that it was completely unfair to oppress people. Another memory from someone was their father making fun of their cousin for being gay, and they told their father to knock it off.  Many other memories generated laughter among those in attendance.

GSA set definite goals for this year, such as staff training, freshman seminar presentations, an education assembly and speaking to Shattuck.

The group plans to meet on Thursday, Oct. 1 to advance goals.
