Terlap Becomes New Editor-in-Chief for Satellite Newspaper
Maddie Terlap, senior, is the newest Editor-in-Chief for the NHS newspaper’s, Satellite, 2015-16 school year.
In April of the 2014-’15 school year, Mrs. Beth Plankey told Terlap in the hallway after “just running into her” to come to the meeting after school. Plankey urged Terlap to do so before revealing to Terlap her plans to make her Editor-in-Chief for her senior year because of the potential she saw in Terlap’s ability to lead.
“It was out of the blue,” Terlap said repeatedly while telling the story with a shy smile on her face. Her initial nervousness of being in charge of reporters has dispersed since the school year has started.
Throughout the 2015-’16 school year Terlap plans on getting more people involved in Satellite, which is already showing growth from last year’s meetings. She also plans on putting videos and podcasts on Satellite’s new domain website that Terlap, Alyx Prieto and Emma Fuhrman worked on during summer. They tried out different designs and setups before deciding on the design that is now shown.
Terlap plans on going into a journalism career where her passion for investigating, talking to people and writing join together. Her favorite story that she has written for Satellite was her investigative article on the 2015 Veteran’s Day memorial at NHS.
Maddie Terlap is more than just the Editor-in-Chief for Satellite. When she is not working on the Satellite, she loves to spend time with her family and friends and do homework for school. Terlap also visited Lollapalooza this summer, which featured acts Sam Smith, Twenty One Pilots, Misterwives and more. Her traveling experience extends to Paris as well. In March she took the trip with French club, which Terlap describes as her favorite place she has traveled.
Terlap describes NHS as “involved.”
“I think a lot of people are joining clubs and sports and getting the community involved as well,” Terlap explained.
