Soccer, Food and New Adventures
With 4,882 miles between him and home, Till Johannes Wendeler says that he is excited, but nervous to be here on a new continent, in new country at a new school.
Traveling here from Germany results in typical homesickness because of being away from family, friends and familiars, but it was also a language struggle. Wendeler says that he has trouble knowing the meaning of words, not always the pronunciation. It can be nerve wreaking to ask during class. Although, he has spoken English for almost his whole life, everyone back home speaks German.
He, however, does enjoy the new adventures that have opened up to him, learning how to play American games like “Truth or Dare” and “Never Have I Ever” is something he finds exciting.
Although he misses his parent’s home cooked meals and thinks that most Americans eat pretty badly, Wendeler says that he cannot get enough of the food. “Bad for you or not, it’s all really good,” he said with a smile.
In his spare time he has joined the Neenah JV Boys’ Soccer. Soccer is the most popular sport in Germany; Wendeler played it in his own hometown. He says that he has met most of his friends through soccer and is glad he met them.
Although it may be a struggle sometimes, Wendeler is happy and excited to be here learning things and having new and interesting experiences.
