NHS in the News: Students Confront Bias
A course at NHS, called Race, Rights, and Trans-cultural Beliefs, has students facing controversial topics head-on. Subject matters such as race, immigration, and LGBTQ rights are discussed and debated in the class in a respectful manner. Mrs. Barb Jirikowic, who teaches the class, and several students were featured in an article by the Post-Crescent regarding the class. “We can criticize ideas, but we don’t criticize each other,” Jirikowic said in the article.

I like to see coverage of this class. I think it’s important to promote civic engagement through civil discourse as it provides students new ways to think and perhaps improve upon ideas already established. The quote at the end of the article serves the piece well.

This article effectively introduces the class. Although brief, it grabs the attention of reader and encourages to read more on topic through the Post Crescent article.

This new class promotes civic engagement and is a wonderful addition to the coursebook here at NHS. I read the Post Crescent article on Mrs. J’s class and was very impressed by what they had to say. Mrs. J’s class promotes civic discourse which is one of the most important parts of democracy. I believe all classes should be structured similarly where you can freely explore topics without fear of being judged. In fact classes like Mrs. J’s should be offered to the entire public to remove bias and spread enlightenment in a safe, educational setting
