A project spearheaded by NHS’s Knitting Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) provides knitted helmet liner hats for U.S military troops.

The thin wool hats must be dull-colored, fireproof and moisture-wicking, club adviser Lori Uvaas said. Soldiers wear the end product underneath their helmets for an additional layer of comfort.

Knitters received patterns and instructions from Sandy Yerxa, a DAR representative, at their February meetings.

The DAR plans to collect the helmet liners at the end of the school year; they will send the hats to troops next fall.

Eight students along with several staff members currently participate in the project. Most participants previously took part in knitting club.

“It was difficult to learn at first, but now it’s relaxing,”  club member Pippa Austin said of knitting.

More opportunities exist to join in on the project. “We will welcome any and all knitters — students or staff or family or friends — that would like to knit hats,” Uvaas said.
