Transmission Single Review: Weave by Foxing

Transmission Single Review: Weave by Foxing

Today we’re changing pace a little bit over in the world of Transmission Reviews, and instead of reviewing an entire album, I thought I’d take a look at the new single for the upcoming album Dealerwhich is to be released October 30th by one of my favorite bands of all time, Foxing. Could I possibly be hinting at a future review? Only time can answer.

But as for right now, I’d like to take an irredeemable minute of your life to tell you about the second of two singles Foxing has released for this album. If you’re interested in hearing either of the two be sure to read the whole review or just haphazardly scroll down to find the links I’ll be sure to list.

On par with the first single, entitled “The Magdalene”, “Weave” takes a much softer approach to Foxing’s dark and dreamy post-rock emo fusion with more subdued (but still powerful) vocals from lead singer Conor Murphy. Each guitar note is a raindrop upon a lake at sunset, and the tide simply escalates throughout the track with gradual builds in drums and layers of guitars/backing vocals until the eventual release across the shore. Everything is drenched in reverb, but unlike The Albatross, the guitars stay clean and everything feels very pretty. It’s very easy to transcend from the shore into the water and to be suspended inside of it whilst the fleeting rays of the days end dance beside you. All too fitting considering the art for the single is simply a rocky coastline with white serif font in the center.

Lyrically, it’s been confirmed by an interview with Wall Street Journal that the band is talking about the oddity of The Albatross‘s lasting effects on the band’s reputation. Lines like “…now I am haunted by the bird,” and “Making a living off of drowning…” reinforce the emotional significance that the album has for the band. One listen through practically any of the tracks from the record will confirm this, with Murphy often caught yelling instead of his delicate delivery on “Weave”. Along with the emotional toll, the band simply desires to move on as a group and make music that they enjoy making rather than worrying about it’s appeal. Foxing is basically saying what most bands eventually will say: we are subject to change.

Personally, I am a fan of both of Foxing’s styles thus far, and eagerly await the release of Dealer.

DREAMY GUITARS, COMPLEX DRUMS, SOFT VOCALS, LOTS OF WATERY EMOTIONS
